Sincere and Fierce Maam Doray

Prof. Rhodora Olegario Dela Peña, also fondly known as “Doray” to her closest friends, hails from Binmaley, Pangasinan. She is the eldest among five siblings. She graduated from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics. On June 1, 1978, she became an Instructor at the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, now known as the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics (IMSP), University of the Philippines Los Baños. She taught basic courses in mathematics and major subjects in applied mathematics.

In 1982, Prof. Doray decided to pursue a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics, also at the University of the Philippines Diliman. It was during the first semester of her graduate studies when she met her husband, Billy, who was also from Pangasinan. They got married in 1983 through civil rite and, in the following year, they had their civil wedding. A year later, she earned her master’s degree. The Lord blessed their marriage with two children namely, Kristoffer and Ma. Cristina, who earned their undergraduate degrees in Applied Physics and Agribusiness Management, respectively, from UPLB.

Although Prof. Doray always maintained a low profile in the Institute, she never shied away from tasks and always made sure to deliver it on time. You know she is around when you hear her loud and distinct speaking voice. With her enthusiastic and interactive style of teaching, there are no dull moments in her class. To her colleagues,  she is very frank but also very sincere.

Guided by the motto “Serve the true God and the rest are easy,” Prof. Doray spent 42 years of her life teaching in IMSP where she rose from Instructor 1 to Assistant Professor 7 until she reached compulsory retirement last January 13, 2020. She has welcomed every blessing and obstacle in her teaching life with an open heart, and she remained passionate about teaching even until today.
