Mr. Allan Kim Gayahan is an alumnus of University of the Philippines – Los Baños (UPLB) where he acquired his undergraduate degree in Applied Mathematics as a DOST scholar. He also acquired a BS Computer and Network Security in Wilmington University in New Castle, Delaware. He continued his studies and took MS Data Science at Johns Hopkins University which is considered the America’s first research university. He also received a scholarship in the Data Science Fellowship in Flatiron School, a coding bootcamp with programs in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity engineering, and product design.

Mr. Gayahan served as a Bioenvironmental Engineering Craftsman in the Unites States Air Force (USAF) from 2011 to 2017. During his service, he conducted occupation and environmental surveys (i.e. Air Sampling, Radiation detection, Spectrometer Measurement, Noise Measurement) and analyzed current and potential workplace hazards. He was also part of the Emergency Responder team in tandem with Fire Fighters, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (aka Bomb Squad), military police, and Emergency Management. It was also during his service when he completed his Associates in Bioenvironmental Engineering and his Bachelor’s in Computer and Network Security.

In 2018 to 2019, he worked as an IT specialist in the US Army Cyber Command providing IT/Cybersecurity support, security, and services in the base’s area of responsibility. On his next journey, he joined McKean Defense Group, a US Navy contractor, and started his Data Science career. One of his projects in this company was a machine learning model, Cyber Vulnerability Classifier. The model enables an organization to identify the appropriate mitigation, recommended by applicable standards and policies, once a vulnerability is identified.

His proactive career continued at the US Navy Inspector General where he functioned as Operations Research Analyst – Data Scientist, from October 2020 to May 2021. In his short tenure, he created a simulation model that provided feasible solution for manpower problems within the organization. He also conducted a descriptive and diagnostic analysis identifying which aspects of the organization are well received and/or needs improvement.

Currently, he is working as a Senior Data Scientist and Technology Consultant at Ernst and Young (EY), one of the “Big Four” firm in the world. In this firm, he provided insights to clients and promoted the culture of data-driven organization through data science and analytics.

To add more, one his notable project is in collaboration with the University of San Agustin in Iloilo and serve as Machine Learning Advisor on Image Classification. Through Machine Learning, the objective is to improve the healthcare industry on analyzing imaging diagnostic results such X Rays (COVID-19 detection) and MRIs (Brain Tumor).

Aside from his passion in analytics, he is also very interested in photography and travelling the world with his wife, a UPLB alumna. He also spends some time mentoring current UPLB students who are part of his Academic Organization, UPLB DOST – Scholars Society and an avid advocate for switching to Data Science industry.

Mr. Allan Kim Gayahan showed that the applications of data science have a very wide range, from military applications through operations in accounting firms. Moreover, he also proves that UPLB graduates are indeed world-class and have valuable contributions in their field of expertise.
