Abigail Azucena Gonzalgo, BS Applied Physics, Batch 1997

Being the daughter of a mathematics high school teacher and a mathematics college professor, Abigail Azucena Gonzalgo was inspired to pursue a science- and math-oriented career, specifically in the field of physics. She finished her degree in BS Applied Physics at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics, University of the Philippines Los Baños, under the DOST-SEI scholarship. 

After her undergraduate study, she had a brief stint as a Physics teaching associate at IMSP in 1997 before eventually moving to Nippon Sheet Glass Phils., Inc in 1997 as a senior process engineer. She was a part of the start-up team who established the operation manuals, trained personnel, and started the ISO 9002 internal audit of the company. 

She also worked as a Reliability Engineer at Cypress Manufacturing Ltd. – Phil. Branch from 2000-2002 where she played an active role in the complete transfer of the Testing Group (Military Test for Hermetic Devices) from Cypress San Jose, California to Cypress Philippines. She handled all subcontractors’ reliability testing for qualification, engineering evaluations and quarterly reliability monitor.

With her continuous pursuit and desire to contribute to the needs of the society, she landed a job at Sunpower Manufacturing Ltd, a company leading the global solar innovation. She first served as photovoltaic module reliability engineer and then was later assigned as senior modules research and development engineer. Because of her talent, hard work and dedication, she was given recognition (three-time Prism Awardee and a Bright Spot Awardee) as part of the team that delivered the 20% efficient module,  a feat not easily achieved in the solar energy industry.

In 2012, she moved to Singapore to work in REC Solar Pte. Ltd as senior laboratory engineer with a remarkable achievement of increasing the uptime of laboratory equipment from 70% to 95%. In 2017, she found her way back home here in the Philippines by accepting a job in Merlin Solar Technologies (Phils) Inc as senior quality assurance and reliability engineer. At present, she is a senior quality engineer at Dyson Electronics Pte Ltd., a leading global technology company. At her helm, the team passed the Integrated Management System Certification.

She relays, “Working with other nationalities has broadened my experiences. Work style is very different in Singapore, everything is fast paced but it is also where my family’s bond grew stronger and we learned to value each other’s opinions more highly.”  With innate leadership and the ability to quickly adapt, her over 20 years of engineering experience in various local and multinational companies has been truly fruitful.

Further, the BS Applied Physics alumna shares, “I realized that knowledge in applied physics is one of key competencies needed for the technology-related companies for the industrial revolution. This field will be able to help the development of both the software and hardware of the electronic parts needed for the technology. Our background in circuit assembly analysis and material interfaces has helped me greatly in failure analysis and risk assessment.”

Despite her busy schedule, she manages to juggle work with being a wonderful mom to Gayle and Gavin and a loving wife to Rico. The family’s favorite bonding activities are looking for good books in bookstores/book sales and sharing meals in Japanese restaurants.
