The Mathematics Division of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics conducted its Special Problem (SP) Colloquium for the First Semester 2023-2024 last January 8, 2024.

Eleven students participated, one from the BS MATH program and ten from the BS AMAT program.

The students presented their research outputs from their Special Problems courses. These outputs spanned various domains namely Coding Theory, Quantitative Management and Decision Science, and Financial Mathematics and Actuarial Science.

Ms. Paula Nicole Mojica, advisee of Asst. Prof. Monica Torres, was recognized as the best paper presenter for her research entitled “Evacuation Site Allocation for Mount Pinatubo Eruption Using Linear Programming.” Her research shows a practical application of mathematical concepts in addressing relevant challenges in the Philippines.

The SP Colloquium is regularly conducted to help cultivate a vibrant research culture within the Division by providing a valuable platform for students to showcase their work. The impact of the SP Colloquium extends beyond the event itself as previous student presenters have actively participated in national and international research colloquiums and publications.
